How To Bath Your Baby Naturally

Babies smell wonderful.

Well, most of the time anyway! Even the most gorgeous newborn needs a bath on occasion! And once they’re relaxed in the water it’s a really special few minutes – a way of bonding with your baby, having some playtime and creating signals that bedtime is approaching. Bathtime, a final feed and bed – that’s the routine many mums and dads are keen to settle into.

As a new parent, this can be a bit daunting. But you needn’t worry.

It’s really all about being prepared

The first rule is to have everything at hand before you start.

Get together the sleeping outfit you’re putting your baby into, a clean nappy, barrier cream if you use it, a towel, some cotton wool and clean water in a bowl. You’ll also probably want a special baby bath for newborns but as your baby grows he or she can splash about in an adult bath. (The video above from Mothercare is a great step by step guide on what to get together and how to bath your baby thoroughly and safely.)

All you need is love and a bit of water

Clean water is really all you need for a newborn. However, there will be times when you’ll want to put something into the bath water or use a bit of soap to help the cleaning up along.

And you don’t want to be introducing any chemicals to your baby. You want to hold off on any potential irritants or allergens for as long as possible. Well, certainly whilst you’re in charge of their skincare routine anyway! And if you’re a vegetarian or vegan you want to avoid contact with animal fats too.

Because all our products are chemical free and only contain natural mineral goodness they’re ideal for baby bathtime. They’re also suitable for use by vegetarians and vegans.

You can use our Natural Mineral Soap to keep your baby fresh and clean and feel confident that you’re not introducing any harmful parabens into the water.

When your baby is a little older, you might also like to put a handful of our Natural Mineral Bath Salts into the water. If your child has infantile eczema this can be very soothing, as many parents have written to tell us. (And all our products are available from Boots.)

When you’re a sleep-deprived new parent every little helps. And a happy, comfortable baby is a contented baby – who’s likely to be a better sleeper!

Babies don’t stay little for long and you want to enjoy this precious time to the full. So be prepared, relax and be confident in your abilities. MumsNet is a great forum for parents and you can find a lot of hints and tips from others to help you with any issues you may be facing.

And if we can help with our natural bathtime products we’ll be delighted.
